Middle School (6-8)

The Trident Academy program is guided by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and the South Carolina State Standards.  Students receive instruction in traditional subjects such as

  • Language Arts
  • Reading
  • Writing and Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Students will learn the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading and spelling through prescriptive, diagnostic, sequential, structures and multi-sensory teaching.  Each student will have individualized learning plans, but most will include basic OG approaches and tools.  See below for an example of an OG approach to a Middle School curriculum:

  • Language Arts
    • The OG approach of sequential, systematic, and multi-sensory incorporated into each lesson
  • Reading
    • 20 minutes of Out Loud reading to a parent/guardian required daily
    • Focus on narrative and informational text
    • Employ decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies with deeper levels of study and more complex text
    • Utilize Project Reads Report Form, Houghton Mifflin Readers, Chapter Books, New Practice Readers, and Read Naturally
  • Writing & Grammar
    • Learn grammar by writing sentences that contain/reference grammar concepts
    • Refine simple, compound, and complex sentences with basic and expanded parts of speech
    • Work on research papers
    • Utilize Project Reads Framing Your Thoughts, Diana King and WVC Writing Matters
  • Vocabulary
    • Develop and build Word Wizard Walls arranged by parts of speech
    • Understand Tier II words that appear across all subjects
  • Math
    • Review lower school concepts
    • Multiplication/Division
    • Area/Perimeter
    • Decimals
    • Percentages
    • Geometry
